During the 1960's and 70's, the Ranch was part of a
valley-wide turkey farm operation which included about a dozen poultry
barns. In the mid-1990's, a residence was built inside part of the last
surviving turkey barn. Later, new buildings were constructed and others
re-purposed to create STARR Ranch, an animal shelter housing both
domesticated and feral animals. STARR Ranch closed in 2005 and the
barns, houses and outbuildings were converted to a mixed agricultural
and residential property.
Rancho Estrella ("es-TRAY-yah")
is a nine-acre working ranch located in Lovall Valley, in the Mayacama
Mountains. Our valley is prime grape-growing country and is situated
between the towns of Sonoma and Napa in California.
Native
Americans hunted deer and other game along Huichica Creek, whose
headwaters begin in Lovall Valley. The area was part of the Rancho
Huichica Land Grant during the Mexican era and was used to run cattle
for many decades.
Today, Rancho Estrella includes three
residences, certified-organic Pinot Noir vineyards, grazing land for
goats, orchards with olives and fruit trees, an organic olive tree
nursery, a hen house and a community vegetable garden.
